Our Most Frequently Asked Questions
Your vehicle(s) will be insured during transport, damage caused by carrier negligence or equipment failure will be covered by the auto shipping or car transport truck that we assign. These auto shipping and car transport trucks, by Federal law, carry a minimum of $750,000 public liability insurance. In addition Fox Auto Transport requires that each independent contractor’s insurance agency supplies us with a certificate of insurance naming Fox Auto Transport as an additional insured or certificate holder. This certificate comes from the insurance agent’s office, not from the independent contractor. The amount of cargo insurance depends on the size and type of their equipment. Any insurance deductible is paid by the independent contractor. If damage is incurred we will act as liaison during the settlement of your claim.
YES. The Interstate Commerce Commission of the United States Government licenses Fox Auto Transport. We hold Motor Carrier authority under Certificate No. MC-584918. We are also bonded under Certificate No. ICCMC.
We recommend that you schedule your move as soon as possible to ensure that your car is moved within the time frame which best meets your schedule. Traditionally, we are able to have a truck assigned and on its way to pick-up your vehicle 1 to 5 business days from the date the vehicle is first available for pick-up.
We can provide guaranteed service by using a truck that will be dedicated to your move. This service can be quite expensive, however, dedicated service is the only way to guarantee a specific pickup schedule. Dedicated Service is guaranteed. However, Fox Auto Transport will only be responsible for refunds related to the transportation cost. We will not be responsible for any other damages or losses suffered by the customer. Please see our Terms & Conditions for more information.
There are two major factors in determining how long your vehicle transport will take for delivery. First is the distance between pick-up and delivery. Typically the longer the distance for the transport the longer it will take the driver to deliver the vehicle. In addition to the distance, the number of stops the driver will have to make will also play a factor in the delivery time. Unexpected delays can be caused by traffic conditions, weather conditions, and roadway conditions; rare mechanical problems can also add time to the delivery. There are State and Federal regulations that the drivers must comply with. These regulations include restrictions on the amount of daily and weekly time the drivers can log as on duty and driving. Additionally the drivers are required to conduct daily truck safety inspections and do routine maintenance as needed.
On average, a trip of up to 500 miles will take 1 to 3 days – 1,000 miles will take 3 to 5 days – 2,000 miles will take 5 to 8 days, and coast to coast will range from 7 to 14 days. Remember, these are just estimated times for delivery. We will try to provide an accurate estimate of delivery as the truck assignment is made. Once a carrier is actually assigned to a vehicle they will give a much more accurate time frame for pick-up and delivery. Please Note – Pick-up dates and delivery times are not guaranteed.
Almost every car company transports their new cars from the factory on an open truck. The few that do not are Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls Royce, the list of exotic cars goes on and on. The main difference is the level of protection from outside elements (dirt, debris, etc). Enclosed carriers also have tiered insurance levels that allow them to accommodate vehicles over 1,000,000.00. Another reason you’d ship your vehicle on an enclosed carrier is available load height, a lift-gate enclosed carrier can load cars with a minimum of ground clearance.
Absolutely no items are allowed in your vehicle if you are shipping overseas, or to Alaska and Hawaii. The shipping ports will not accept your vehicle because the Customs Agents will not inspect your vehicle if there are any items not attached to the vehicle from the factory. There is no tolerance for exceptions to this policy.
If you are shipping in the continental United States the following applies:
Federal and State Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations prohibit the transport of household items in vehicles being transported by auto carriers.
Several common sense reasons also suggest why packing items in your vehicle is not a good idea. Personal goods may shift around (forcefully at times) in the trunk or interior of the transported vehicle and become damaged or damage the vehicle. It is also possible that the stored items may cause a weight problem with your vehicle and add unnecessary difficulties with loading and unloading, and possible undercarriage damage to your vehicle. Any items left in the vehicle are totally at the owner’s personal risk.
We prefer not to ship personal belongings inside a vehicle. Personal belongings that are inside the car at the time of transport are not insured. If you need to put personal items (Not Household Items) you must limit your items to less than 100lbs. These items should be confined to the trunk area. We do not recommend packing electronics, breakable items or items of great monetary or sentimental value. If you do decide to place objects inside the vehicle, please keep them “light and out of sight.” Remember, since these items are not insured, we ask that they be securely positioned in an area that is not visible. Under NO circumstances can the car contain firearms, hazardous materials, illegal substances, or contraband.
VISA, Master Card, American Express, Discover, electronic transfer, personal checks, money orders, or company checks will be accepted for deposit. As for balance due, the auto shipping and car transport company’s carrier will accept cash, cashiers check, postal money order, or official bank check ONLY. You may make payment in full, with a credit card; at the time the order is placed if necessary. A $20 fee plus a 5% processing fee will be assessed if paying in full by credit card.
The vehicle will be picked up as close to your home as possible. In some cases we ask that you meet our truck at a mutually appealing location such as a supermarket or some other large parking lot. This is due to the typically large size of the trucks and the inability to maneuver through many streets, and under low bridges, wires, and branches.
Door-to-Door means the auto shipping or car transport driver will get as close to your door as he can legally and safely get. Many cities have restrictions on large trucks that prohibit them from driving into some residential areas. Transport trucks are enormous and need lots of room to maneuver and turn around, so if access to your home is restricted by narrow streets, low-hanging trees, speed bumps or tight turns, the driver may ask that you meet the truck at a large parking lot nearby such as a grocery store.
Secure or remove any loose parts or specialty items such as ground effects, spoilers, fog lights, or wide mirrors, and lower or remove the antenna if possible. Repair or seal any tears or open seams on convertible tops to prevent fast-moving air from causing further damage. Make sure the radiator has adequate levels of fresh antifreeze. Be sure that the battery is secure, has no leaks, and that the fluid levels are low enough to accommodate expansion. Leave only about ¼ tank of gas in the vehicle, as a full tank of gasoline adds a lot of costly weight to the transport. Deactivate or disconnect anti-theft devices. There can be serious problems and unnecessary expenses if the driver is locked out or if the alarm goes off during the auto shipping process or the car transport. And finally, make sure that your vehicle is clean enough to ensure an accurate pickup inspection.
At the pick up location the carrier must do a Bill of Lading (do not release your vehicle to the carrier otherwise, and call us immediately), it’s basically the same thing you do if you’ve ever rented a car, you’ll walk around the vehicle with the carrier and note any damage that is visible, scratches, dents, and dings should all be noted on the Bill of Lading, it is a carbon copy piece of paper with 3 sheets, after the inspection go over the Bill of Lading make sure it is accurate and sign it. The carrier will keep 2 copies and you’ll keep a copy.
The same thing will happen at the delivery end, you must take the Bill of Lading and compare it to the vehicle to make sure there is no damage, if there isn’t, you sign the Bill of Lading pay the driver and you are done.
You must note any damage at the time of delivery, note it on the Bill of Lading and have the carrier sign the Bill of Lading then the insurance company will take care of the damage. If your vehicle is being delivered at night, you must use a flashlight and go over your vehicle, if your vehicle is dirty make sure you wipe off the dirt to inspect it. Make sure you do a thorough job inspecting the car at the delivery end. If you notice damage after the carrier has left and you’ve signed the Bill of Lading you will have little recourse.
Yes, you or your designated individual must be present at both the pickup and delivery for when the auto shipping or car transport company arrives.
We ask that you make yourself as available as possible. Please do not take off work or hang around your home until you speak with the driver.
In the event you are not able to release or take possession of your vehicle, you may appoint anyone to do this task. We ask that you supply us with the proper information for contact in this situation.
Your vehicle will stay on one truck with the same driver for the duration of the trip unless something unforeseen happens to the original truck or driver (i.e. – a mechanical breakdown or illness).
The auto shipping driver will drive your car on and off the car transport, and may have to unload and reload your car occasionally during transport to optimize space on the trailer. This unloading / reloading is kept to a minimum. Your car should not be driven otherwise, and odometer readings should be noted at pickup and delivery. Discrepancies should be noted on the delivery receipt and signed off by the driver.

A common questions is, “Can’t I arrange transport directly with an auto shipping or car transport trucking company directly?” There is usually no difference between the rates quoted by a Broker and those of a carrier. Most carriers travel very specific routes and may not be able to accommodate your pickup point, destination, or schedule. Many people aren’t aware that if the carrier they choose is unable to service their requirements, that carrier may broker the transportation to a different transport company anyway. As a Bonded Broker (ICC/MC-584918), we deal with a large network of auto shipping and car transport companies who service many different routes. We deal only with reputable carriers who are properly licensed and insured, and we act as the liaison between the carrier and you, the customer. We have a well established base of trucks providing quality service to assure you a worry free move.
